Ages 18+years welcome! Join us in the woodshop for this 12-hour woodworking skill-building workshop! Inspired by Japanese traditional shoji lamps, Instructor Michael Olin shares his take with students continuing their exploration of the woodshop and woodworking techniques.

A shoji lamp is a light fixture with kumiko and rice paper inset into the frame to diffuse the light. Students will learn how to make their interpretation of a shoji lamp using pre-milled lumber using half-lap joints. We will practice layout and advanced techniques on the table saw to complete this project. We apply many of the same techniques in this class that we use in making full-size shoji doors.

REQUIRED: Students must have taken our Intro to the Woodshop course in order to enroll in this class. If you have other woodworking experience, please leave details in the notes upon purchase and we will be in touch with you if we have questions.
Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here.

This workshop is held indoors in our woodshop, so we suggest:
• Dress in layers so you can adjust to the studio temperature. We work with windows open.
• Bring water/beverage.
• Wear c
losed-toe shoes — dropping tools on toes really hurts!
• Long hair must be tied back.
• Do not wear clothing with flowy sleeves and no dangly jewelry as these items can get caught on tools and machines.

DIRECTIONS: Located in Liberty Station’s Arts District, you can find our studio at the end of the hallway on the 1st floor of the Dorothea Laub Music & Arts Center (Bldg 176) at the corner of Roosevelt & Truxtun, next to The Lot movie theater. There is plenty of free parking. Parking Lot Q is behind our studio — enter via the driveway off Dewey. Across the street in the Vons parking lot, it is also free. If you can’t find us, call or text 619.273.3235.

CLASS SIZE: 3 min. If the minimum is not met, you will receive a full refund or credit toward another class.

REFUNDS: No refunds for tardiness or no-shows. For a refund (minus a 5% processing fee), you must cancel 7 days before the start of the class. After 7 days, we cannot offer refunds, as materials and supplies have already been purchased.

TRANSFERS: You may transfer your enrollment spot to someone else, but transfers must happen before the workshop begins. Please email us to let us know who’s coming.

INTEREST LIST: If a class is full or you would like to be notified of future offerings, join our Interest List to be notified when new dates or spaces are available.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:
Raised in Illinois, I was first exposed to carpentry when I was 6 years old when we had an addition put on to our old farmhouse. I was very interested in the framing process. Since then, I have loved building and working with my hands. After a short period of working in agriculture insurance, I switched to carpentry. From carpentry, I found fine woodworking. I have been working in custom cabinetry and practicing Kumiko since I moved to San Diego. – Michael Olin
